The National Museum “Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu” is located within the Krujë Castle and is one of the most important museum institutions in Albania. It is dedicated to the national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu, the leader of the Albanian resistance against the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century, and was inaugurated in 1982.
The museum was designed by architects Pranvera Hoxha and Pirro Vaso, featuring symbolic architecture that reflects traditional Albanian medieval castles. Inside, it preserves historical documents, weapons, symbols, original objects, and replicas of artifacts from Skanderbeg’s era, illustrating his life, battles, and impact on the history of the Albanian people.
The museum’s exhibition is organized both chronologically and thematically, covering the formation of the Kastrioti Principality, Skanderbeg’s battles, and his legacy in European culture. From the museum’s terrace, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views over the city of Krujë and the plains below, making the visit a unique historical and aesthetic experience.
Today, the “Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu” Museum stands as a symbol of national pride and is one of Albania’s most visited tourist attractions, where history and Albanian identity come together in a single space.
