The Tower of Refuge in Theth, also known as Nikoll Koçi’s Tower, is one of the most remarkable monuments of Albanian cultural heritage. Built over three centuries ago, it served as a shelter for men in hiding according to the laws of the Kanun of Lekë Dukagjini, a customary code that governed life and honor in the highlands.
The tower is built with strong stones, thick walls, and small windows, reflecting its defensive function. Inside, visitors can see the original spaces where those in hiding stayed, including the sleeping room, the hearth, and the meeting area where important decisions for the clan were made.
Today, the Tower of Refuge has been transformed into a small museum that preserves the history and spirit of the Albanian mountains. It is a living testament to an ancient culture, where honor and ‘besa’ (oath of trust) were valued above all else. Visiting the tower allows you to experience up close the history, customs, and way of life of Theth’s inhabitants through the centuries.
