The Old Town of Berat is the historical and cultural heart of the city, internationally known as the “City of a Thousand Windows” because of its characteristic Ottoman houses with numerous windows, perched on the slopes of the hills surrounding the Osum River. This ancient city offers a unique journey through time, where every cobbled street, courtyard, and façade preserves the traces of Berat’s centuries-old history.
The Old Town is mainly divided into two historic neighborhoods: Mangalem and Gorica, connected by the Gorica Bridge, an 18th-century stone architectural monument. The neighborhoods retain the typical Ottoman structure, with closely built houses, small courtyards, and numerous windows that create a stunning panoramic view over the city and the river.
Within this city, there are also numerous historical and cultural sites, such as the Berat Castle, various museums, mosques, Orthodox churches, and other monuments, which reflect the coexistence of different faiths and cultures over the centuries. The Old Town is not only a place to see but also to experience traditional city life, with small cafés, artisans, and local markets.
Today's visitors can stroll through the narrow streets, soak in the historic atmosphere, capture panoramic views of the Osum River, and discover the architectural and cultural heritage that has made Berat one of Albania’s most unique cities and a must-visit destination for every traveler.
